Tula was born in Iquitos, Peru and spent her youth in the Amazon. She completed her MSc at the Durrell Institute of Conservation and Ecology at the University of Kent, England, and began her research career working with primates in the Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo Community Reserve in Peru.
