Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs)

Did you know? If you turned 70 ½ in 2019, or turned 72 in 2020, you are required to withdraw a taxable minimum distribution from your individual retirement accounts. However, you may send that distribution directly to Earthwatch and it will be 100% tax-free. Simply contact your financial institution to make those arrangements.

Donor Advised Funds

If you are interested in making a larger charitable donation now, but then distributing the funds over the next several years, a donor advised fund can be established with a variety of organizations, including local community foundations and financial institutions. Once established, you can direct yearly gifts to Earthwatch from your fund.

A donor-advised fund allows you to recommend how much and how frequently money is granted to qualified nonprofit organizations such as Earthwatch. You can make an immediate impact by recommending a grant or recurring grants, or you can use your fund as a tool for future charitable gifts.

Tax Effective Giving

All contributions from U.S. citizens to Earthwatch in support of its scientific research projects are tax-deductible, including membership dues, volunteer contributions, expedition fund deposits, and one-off donations. In most cases, volunteer participants may also deduct expenses incurred while traveling to and from an expedition, potentially reducing the personal cost of the expedition by as much as 40% depending on the volunteer’s tax bracket. However, as with all tax matters, we recommend that you consult your personal tax advisor on all issues concerning tax deductibility.

YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Earthwatch depends on donations—above and beyond what we raise from volunteers who participate on our expeditions—in order to deliver our global conservation mission. In fact, volunteer contributions provide only half of the total resources Earthwatch needs to sustain over 40 field research expeditions, a wide variety of educational programs, corporate sustainability trainings, and more each year.
