POSITION SUMMARY:


The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for the overall management of the marketing and communication function within the organization. Responsibilities include management of staff, all publications creation and web design, working closely with all departments to meet organization needs. The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for development and implement of marketing strategies that increase participation on expeditions.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Manage publications, creative and web staff
  • Work with COO, to create departmental annual budget and plan, including staffing, advertising, printing, posting, mail house, and other expenses, and track and manage all budget lines and costs
  • Provide broad marketing support across the whole organization: design and implement annual organization marketing plans, including print collateral, web, and email promotions
  • Design and implement marketing programs designed to support and achieve specific key targets in the area of volunteer and membership recruitment and inquiries
  • Work closely with the sales team to develop short term marketing strategies to support weak or under recruiting projects
  • Design and implement marketing and communications strategies in support of fund raising related initiatives
  • Work closely with senior staff to design and implement specific marketing plans and collateral in support of programmatic departments
  • Work with the IT team to develop and explain the role of the website and email promotions as effective sales and marketing tools. Help increase on-line sales, inquiries, memberships, donation and community building
  • Identify and develop internet marketing and promotional opportunities both internally and externally through commercial and nonprofit sites
  • Manage all aspects of annual advertising campaign, including research, budgeting and placement and consultation with external agencies on a pro-bono or contractual basis
  • Manage aspects of relationships with mail house and letter shop, including tracking postage accounts, PO’s and invoicing
  • Support COO, on strategic marketing initiatives, such as market research, branding and partnerships
  • Monitor competitors’ products, sales and marketing activities
  • Establish and maintain a consistent organizational image throughout all product lines, promotional materials, and events

Other responsibilities:

  • Serve as a member of the leadership team, to help develop, manage and execute the key business and program goals of the organization.
  • Contribute as a member of a cross functional team accountable for analysis of sales trends, and implementation of actions to achieve targets
  • Collaboration with the Finance team on analysis of marketing costs and return on time invested in activities, as well as ongoing departmental reporting
  • Oversight of departmental budget
  • Networking with other organizations and communities to share best practice and build partnerships in order to deliver Earthwatch’s mission

REQUIREMENTS:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, or other related field required, M.B.A preferred
  • 5-7 years’ experience in marketing, advertising and promotions preferably in a nonprofit membership organization
  • 3 years staff management
  • Track record of creating and managing successful marketing plans with demonstrated revenue and audience generation results
  • Experience with direct mail, subscription campaigns and advertising buying
  • Proven ability to meet multiple deadlines, balance numerous project and react to changing requirements and priorities
  • Budgeting, analytical and computer skills
  • Knowledge of and experience with e-commerce marketing
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills: superior writing skills
  • Proven ability to develop and drive new initiatives, work collaboratively with groups across the organization, oversee projects to completion and measure results
  • An analytical thinker who understands the needs of the organization and can suggest creative solutions to achieve objectives
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and high volume of work on deadline
  • Flexibility to respond to changing priorities in a fast paced environment
