In Celebration of World Sea Turtle Day
Sea turtles have roamed the oceans for more than 100 million years. They play a key role in marine ecosystems by maintaining the health of seagrasses and coral reefs. Today, however, six of the seven species of sea turtles are threatened or endangered due to habitat loss, plastic pollution, and entanglement in nets and other fishing equipment, among other threats. In this video, you’ll hear from the Earthwatch scientists who lead our expeditions “Costa Rican Sea Turtles” and “Tracking Sea Turtles in the Bahamas.”
Over the past 45 years, Earthwatch has supported 21 sea turtle research studies in 13 countries around the world, helping to protect all seven species of turtles and their habitats.
