Human Resources Intern

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven Human Resources (HR) Intern. As HR Intern, you will work under the supervision of the Operations Director to provide HR-related support to the operations department and our, roughly, 34 person staff. Depending on prior experience and areas of interest, in addition to administrative tasks, the HR Intern will have the opportunity to take on one or more business improvement projects.
To be successful, you should be detail-oriented, keep up on the latest developments in labor legislation, and feel driven to improve the employee experience
- Research and propose updates to processes and policies
- Report changes in industry trends and/or state and federal employment legislation, as well as research specific guidelines and regulations pertaining to employment law
- Update internal databases with new and departing employee and intern information
- Create and send HR-related updates to staff, e.g. PTO status, updated policy, benefit notifications, etc.
- Prepare HR-related reports and presentations
- Take part in one or more business improvement projects, including but not limited to updating and improving:
- employee handbook
- training programs
- remote work practices
- employee engagement and retention strategies
- HR efficiencies via technology
- HR compliance across multiple states
- Other duties as assigned
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Bachelor's degree in HR management or studying toward a degree in HR management or related field
- Ability to plan and manage projects and workloads in an efficient manner
- Knowledge of U.S. labor laws
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills
- Effective communication skills
- An interest in creating efficiency through workflows and processes
- Interest in Earthwatch’s mission and values
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a member of a culturally diverse, multidisciplinary team
- Demonstrated initiative with a strong work ethic in order to meet or exceed goals while being accountable for personal and professional actions
- Familiarity with HRIS (Human Resources Information System) software and/or relational databases (such as Customer Relationship Management) is advantageous.
- Location: Candidates in MA (Boston area), D.C. area, or California (L.A. area) preferred; option to work part-time in physical office (Boston only) or fully remote
- Hours: This internship will last for a minimum of 2 months and require a 120 hour commitment (8–20 hours/week). Hours and schedule flexible, to be determined with manager
- Salary Grade: Unpaid
