In most cases, contributions by citizens of the U.S. to support scientific research projects sponsored by Earthwatch are tax-deductible. Under some circumstances, volunteers may also deduct out-of-pocket expenses, including transportation to and from research sites.

If you itemize deductions on your tax return, the real cost of joining an Earthwatch expedition could be as much as 40 percent lower than you expect. Just use Earthwatch Tax ID number 23-7168440.

Earthwatch Institute is a public charity, described by Sections 501(c)(3), 509(a)(1), and 170(b)(1)(A)(VI)of the Internal Revenue Code. It is not a private foundation. Contributions of cash, securities, and other properties support scientific research and are wholly tax deductible within the U.S.

You may take a tax deduction for a contribution to Earthwatch. If your generous contribution is for participation in an Earthwatch Expedition, you may take the deduction only after you have paid-in-full and completed your participation in the expedition.

The above is based on our experience and not a legal opinion. As with all tax matters, we recommend you consult your personal tax advisor on all issues concerning tax deductibility.
