Ground Truth 2.0 project – A new approach to citizen observatories

Earthwatch Institute (Europe) is proud to be part of the Ground Truth 2.0 consortium (EC funded).

Earthwatch Institute (Europe) is proud to be part of the Ground Truth 2.0 consortium (EC funded).

The 14 partner consortium is made up of leaders in technology, public and policy-maker engagement, citizen science and environmental research. They have set up six citizen science observatories in Europe and Africa. Ground Truth 2.0 uses validated mobile apps and social media analytics to collect data. As such, citizens are enabled to share data about the environment and to take on a new, crucial role in environmental monitoring, decision making, cooperative planning and environmental stewardship. A movement from data sharing to knowledge sharing.

Earthwatch enables the customisation and upscaling of technologies specific reference to our FreshWater Watch global data platform and app. Earthwatch will also seek to catalyse corporate participation in the project and will take an active role in the Swedish citizen scientist observatory. The key challenge for the Swedish observatory is the deteriorating water health due to current lifestyle choices and consumption patterns. The FreshWater Watch toolkit allows a citizen to monitor the ecological status and water health of a local fresh water body in the Mälaren area (Sweden).

Earthwatch Institute (Europe) is proud to partner with UNESCO-IHE, HydroLogic Research, AKVO, Tygron, VITO, StarLab, Upande Limited, WWF Zambia Country Office, Gavagai, TAHMO-KEN, Altran, Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF) and the Stockholm University Department of Computer and Systems Sciences.

Ground Truth 2.0 is led by UNESCO-IHE and runs for 3 years starting from 1 September 2016. The project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 689744.
