Earthwatch scientist Dr. Kathy Townsend specializes in studying manta rays, coral reefs, sharks, and the human impact on the marine environment.
Why manta rays?
The manta ray’s global distribution and easily identifiable shape make it an excellent indicator species by which to monitor the effects of environmental change on our oceans and reefs. Correlating data on manta distribution and movements with large-scale oceanographic changes will help scientists monitor global oceanic health.
A great moment in the field:
Says Dr. Townsend: “Excitingly, we have captured on film the late-stage courtship behavior of manta rays at Lady Elliot Island, something that has only been done a handful of times before.”
