Supporting the business response to the SDGs

A new report published today demonstrates how employee and stakeholder engagement can help companies meet the challenge of the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

The Global Goals – more commonly known as the SDGs – were launched in September 2015 and represent an ambitious, integrated framework aiming to end poverty, protect our planet, and ensure future prosperity by 2030.

Many companies are considering how to respond and align sustainability initiatives under this framework. The SDGs present a complex challenge for business, but also an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and commitment to a clear corporate purpose.

Earthwatch has produced a report demonstrating how, through partnership working, the global NGO supports companies to communicate and embed sustainability strategies. It contains testimony from many of Earthwatch’s partners including HSBC, Shell, Mitsubishi and Aviva.

Earthwatch is an international NGO providing a unique combination of world-class science with immersive and catalytic employee engagement, leadership development, and supply chain research. We have over 40 years’ experience of bringing people and expert scientists together to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment.

Earthwatch does this through a flexible model of employee and stakeholder engagement in independent scientific research that is material to business. This allows staff, customers, and communities to get actively involved and be inspired to act and change behaviours, whilst providing the critical data needed to fill knowledge gaps and monitor progress against SDG targets.

A survey of 7,500 citizen scientists who took part in a corporate programme revealed that:

• 89% felt that being involved in an Earthwatch programme will help their organisations contribute to the SDGs

• 91% have a better understanding of their organisation’s environmental / CSR programme

• 77% are more likely to continue their career with their organisation

Chief Executive of Earthwatch Europe, Steve Gray, said: “I believe Earthwatch is uniquely placed to help companies address sustainability challenges. I am pleased this has been confirmed by the senior industry leaders, partners and programme participants who have contributed to this report.

“We are extremely grateful to them all for sharing their expertise.”

Please read our report, and share with your networks, and get in touch to discuss how Earthwatch can help you with your SDG priorities.
