Earthwatch was one of 26 charities selected by the royal couple as beneficiaries of the fund. The sum donated will be directed toward the launch of the Earthwatch Climate Change Program for Teachers in the U.K.
Earthwatch executive vice president Nigel Winser says: “We are very excited to receive this generous donation from the Royal Wedding Gift Fund, and to have the opportunity to get our Climate Change Program for Teachers off the ground in 2012. We are looking forward to working with 10 outstanding teachers from state schools across the Upper Thames region of Oxfordshire. Our program will help them inspire their students - the next generation of environmental leaders - to take action to tackle climate change.”

The 10 teachers who take part in the pilot program will learn about climate change firsthand through practical research led by Earthwatch scientists into how forests are responding to a changing climate. They will also work together in facilitated classroom sessions to create teaching resources to take what they learn back to the classroom.
