We design our Earthwatch Teen Expeditions specifically and exclusively for 15- to 18-year-olds. They’re unlike any other experience a teenager can have.
Do something special this summer: help excavate, study, and conserve the seaside city of Populonia, an ancient center of metalworking and trade. And meet fascinating people from around the world as you work.
Your team will focus on two sites: the almost unexcavated Etruscan cemetery of San Cerbone and the early Roman section of Populonia where iron smelting took place.
The tombs you’ll help uncover in San Cerbone were buried beneath iron slag heaps between the fourth and first centuries B.C., when the cemetery was abandoned to make room for growing industry. Misguided excavators used machines to dig through the slag heaps at the beginning of the 20th century, partially destroying many tombs in the process. Your work is key to understanding and preserving a site that might otherwise be lost or looted.
Live the life of an archaeologist, spending most of your time carefully unearthing artifacts and removing them for cleaning and study. You’ll also help catalog and map the locations of artifacts, and perhaps try your hand at rebuilding original objects from the fragments you’ve discovered. You’ll even get to try your hand at creating tools using ancient methods. You’ll have an unparalleled chance to get close to Italy’s ancient past.
