    Environmental Conservation Practices in the Sultanate of Oman

    Traditional conservation practices contending with developmental change: How can field science inform and affect the outcome?


    Join Earthwatch on the evening of March 6, 2014 at the Royal Geographical Society in London to hear three experts discuss environmental conservation practices in the Sultanate of Oman.

    The speakers, Steve Ross, Abdullah Al-Ghafri and Salim Hamood Salim Al-Rawahy, all have vast experience doing environmental science and conservation work in the Middle East. The event will be chaired by Dr Saif al Shaqsi, CEO of the National Field Research Centre in Oman.

    Those unable to join us at the Royal Geographical Society can participate online. Registration details will be posted by the end of January.

    The Earthwatch Lecture Series at the Royal Geographical Society in London is supported by the Mitsubishi Corporation Fund for Europe and Africa.


    Steve Ross

    Steve Ross is a conservation biologist who specialises in pioneering field studies of species on which scientists lack data, including the Arabian tahr and Pallas’s cat. His research interests include behavioural ecology, resource selection and landscape ecology, and he believes that research results should be used to stimulate local interest, enthusiasm and practical conservation management of wildlife. Steve is a research associate at the University of Bristol and an active member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Cat Specialist and Caprinae Specialist groups. Steve is currently based in Oman, where he works in the Hajar Mountain ecosystem with Earthwatch and the National Field Research Centre for Environmental Conservation.

    Abdullah Al-Ghafri

    Abdullah Al-Ghafri currently works as the director of the Aflaj Research Unit and the assistant dean for training of the College of Arts and Science at the University of Nizwa in Oman. He received a Ph.D. in environmental resources—specifically, water management—from Japan's Hokkaido University in 2004. Abdullah has 20 years’ of research experience, and his interests are aflaj (an irrigation method practiced in Oman), agricultural water management, traditional knowledge and ethnohydrology. Abdullah has contributed to many papers in refereed journals, book chapters, conference proceedings and many abstracts, technical reports, public lectures, articles and TV shows.

    Salim Hamood Salim Al-Rawahy

    Dr Al Rawahy has extensive experience in environmental teaching, research and capacity building. Currently, he is the chairman and environmental expert at the Alawael Overseas Company in Oman, and he previously worked in the Environmental Biology Department of Sultan Qaboos University for 22 years. His research interests include environmental assessment and monitoring, environmental conservation, pollution prevention, waste minimisation and global environmental change. He was nominated by the U.S. Department of State to participate in the International Visitor Program on Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection during 2004. He also served as an Honorary Environmental Research Fellow in the School of Environmental Science at the University of Liverpool in the U.K. from 2008 to 2011.
