Regional conservation strategy aims to reverse decline of Asian wild cattle and buffaloes
Over 40 delegates from across South-east Asia have this week agreed to a new regional conservation strategy aimed to reverse the dramatic decline of Asian wild cattle and buffalo species.
The landmark meeting was held over six days in Vĩnh Phúc Province, Vietnam and was co-chaired by Earthwatch's Research Manager Dr. James Burton.
Poaching and habitat destruction are amongst the major threats facing these species. Recent field research shows there is a real danger that Asia's wild cattle and buffalo species are likely to face extinction unless immediate action is taken.
"This is a vital development which highlights the important role that these species play in ecosystem maintenance," says Burton. "The success of this workshop means that approval by governments and the implementation of conservation measures are more likely to go ahead."
