Earthwatch is an international environmental nonprofit organization that funds field expeditions in more than 50 countries.

Earthwatch expeditions provide individuals with opportunities to participate in hands-on scientific research all over the world. We also partner with schools, businesses, governments, and other philanthropic organizations to enable a broad range of people to learn and change the world through our experiential model.

Staff members at Earthwatch develop, manage, market, and recruit for our varied expeditions, programs, and partnerships. Earthwatch does not employ the scientists or research staff that run the expeditions we support; they generally work for universities or other research institutions.


We currently have the following positions available.


Communications Manager, Urban Resiliency Initiative (Part-Time)

The primary responsibility of the Communications Manager is to work in partnership with the Earthwatch Urban Resiliency team to develop compelling story content for the website and monthly newsletter. The manager, a natural storyteller, will manage content development on an ongoing basis, serving as the linchpin to web-based program communications and media outreach efforts. The program involves close to 10 partnerships with nonprofit and research teams in the greater Los Angeles area. A dynamic website is urgently needed to build a stronger online presence, community and brand; to share results; and more. This role is a Part-Time, contracted position for approximately 10 hours per week.


Donor Database Administrator (Part-Time)

Reporting to the Director of Annual Giving & Advancement Services, with a dotted line reporting to the Chief Communications & Development Officer (CCDO), the Donor Database Administrator is responsible for processing all gifts, entering and retrieving gift and constituent data, generating receipts and reports, maintaining the overall integrity of donor and development records, and providing administrative support to executive and development staff as needed. The Donor Database Administrator will contribute both independently and as a team member to the overall fundraising and stewardship efforts of the organization by performing the essential functions listed below. This role is Part-Time, approximately 12 – 15 hours per week.


Marketing Analyst (Part-Time)

The Part-Time Marketing Analyst will be responsible for developing data reports that document the impact of Earthwatch’s digital marketing and communications campaigns across all channels, including email, social media, web, and lead pipeline. He/she will also provide strategic guidance to support a strong data-driven approach to communications tactics and inform future campaign efforts. This position will provide the opportunity to work alongside professionals who are passionate about making a positive difference for the environment. This role is Part-Time, approximately 5 – 7 hours per week.


Digital Marketing Manager

The Digital Marketing Manager will be responsible for planning and executing Earthwatch’s digital marketing strategies and campaigns across all channels. In addition, he/she will serve as the chief strategist and face of Earthwatch’s Ambassador Program, a loyalty and referral marketing program that offers discounts and rewards to members in exchange for spreading the word about Earthwatch. The Digital Marketing Manager will also be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote the Ambassador Program’s growth and engagement. This position will provide the opportunity to work alongside professionals who are passionate about making a positive difference for the environment.


Multimedia Intern

The multimedia intern will assist the Strategic Communications Department in a variety of tasks relating to the outreach and engagement of the Earthwatch audience. The intern will also help develop content for social media, email campaigns, blog posts, and press releases as well as research new media opportunities.


IT Helpdesk Technician

December 19, 2016

Earthwatch is seeking an adaptable and knowledgeable individual to serve as the helpdesk first responder to provide professional-level and timely IT support for approximately 40 staff members. This is an hourly non-exempt position, for approximately 20 hour per week. The successful candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting and resolving problems with computer hardware, peripheral hardware (printers, copiers, faxes, scanners, projectors, speakers, etc.), software, internet and network service, email and intranet accounts, phones and phone service, network and internet equipment, and telephone and network wiring. He or she will respond to requests for service made via phone calls, email, and in-person. The technician will also be responsible for implementing technology upgrades, managing and cleansing data, training staff users, and maintaining data security. She/he will work collaboratively and share information with an international IT team.


Program Delivery Intern

This intern will support the Program Delivery team, which manages the development and implementation of Earthwatch’s citizen science expeditions, student fellowships, teacher fellowships, and corporate sustainability programs. As an intern you will assist in a variety of tasks that support the delivery of these programs. This includes helping to engage and inspire confident participants who are passionate about the environment and supporting sustainability.


Risk Management for International Programs Intern

This intern will support the Program Delivery team, which manages the development and implementation of Earthwatch’s citizen science expeditions. The intern will focus on our Risk Management practices, which are designed to enhance the safety of participants and scientists on our expeditions around the world. As an intern you will assist in a variety of tasks that support the delivery of these programs.


Educator Program Summer Intern

This summer intern will support the Teach Earth program (earthwatch.org/teachearth) to achieve its goal of improving science education and environmental education by providing educators with a hands-on field experience. These educators return to the classroom with new perspectives and knowledge, invigorated and inspired to share the experience of real discovery with their students. As an intern you will assist in a variety of tasks relating to building awareness of this program in the teacher community, seeking grant opportunities, and building the program's alumni network.


Research Archive Intern

Since 1971, Earthwatch has supported scholarly field research worldwide in ocean, freshwater, terrestrial, and urban ecosystems. Earthwatch supports field research that utilizes highly motivated non-specialist volunteers, also called citizen scientists, to collect data. Our rich history has given us a large archive of projects that we have supported. The Research Archive Intern will assist the Research Department in extracting information from Earthwatch archives. Location: Boston, MA Position Type: Internship, unpaid Days per week: 3-5 days (24 – 40 hrs)


Research Associate Intern

Earthwatch supports field research that utilizes highly motivated non-specialist volunteers, also called citizen scientists, to collect data. The Research Department is responsible for soliciting, reviewing, and recommending research proposals for funding and supporting researchers throughout their Earthwatch careers. Earthwatch supports cutting-edge science through field-based expeditions that address: • What is changing? (Discovery) • Why is it changing? (Understanding) • What can we do? (Action) Research Associate Interns will assist the Research Department in a variety of tasks to help support the research team and Earthwatch scientists.


Experiential Learning Intern

Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that supports field research worldwide in ocean health, cultural heritage, climate change, and wildlife and ecosystems. Earthwatch supports field research that utilizes highly motivated non-specialist volunteers, also called citizen scientists, to collect data. As an intern in the Field Research Expeditions department you would assist with a variety of tasks relating to recruiting volunteers to participate in citizen science and experiential learning trips, with a focus on high school aged groups.


Business Development Intern
