Spring Power & Gas, a retail energy provider of electricity and gas supply services for Maryland and New Jersey, is partnering with Earthwatch Institute, a global environmental nonprofit organization, to sponsor a student for the “Climate Change: Sea to Trees at Acadia National Park” expedition. The winner of the fellowship was Sophia Ludtke, a freshman at Newark Academy in Livingston, NJ.

Drought, Meadows, and Climate Change in California’s Sierra Nevada

Loney Meadow, in Sierra Nevada, California, is a 40-acre wet meadow facing climate related disturbances to its uniquely important ecosystem. The functions of the meadow, including water filtration and storage, flood attenuation, and carbon storage, are threatened by the extreme weather conditions incited by our changing climate. Since 2014, Earthwatch volunteers have worked in Loney Meadow collecting data, such as the timing and amount of water moving through, the flora and fauna that live in, and amount of carbon being stored and released, that will aid in the restoration of this ecosystem and prove the benefits of restoring the meadow.

It’s time to stand together

Yesterday afternoon, the Trump administration announced that the U.S. is withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement. While you can withdraw from an agreement—even one as monumentally important as this one—you can’t withdraw from the reality that is climate change.
