The Field Research Expeditions department recruits support for research projects in the forms of paying members of the public and school groups. As part of a small team, Expedition Advisors serve as front-line ambassadors for the Earthwatch brand, steward existing customers, convert new leads, and develop partnerships across a broad spectrum of organizations. The successful candidate will help foster a strong culture of sales in support of team goals. He/she will aid in continuous improvement of sales, lead generation, and customer stewarding techniques. Strong customer service skills and experience with travel sales are required. Phone-based experience is strongly preferred as the position responsibilities are carried out primarily by phone or email. Familiarity with diverse travel markets, personal travel experience, and experience with educational/student group sales are also preferred. An interest in sustainability and scientific research is required.


  • Work directly with participants, donors, and prospects via phone, email, and in-person to generate leads, convert opportunities into sales, and build organization loyalty
  • Deliver prompt, friendly and consistently high-quality customer service and participant stewardship
  • Be accountable for individual and team goals
  • Prospect group and partner leads and convert these leads into sales
  • Convert qualified leads generated via the web and direct marketing 
  • Provide core phone and live web chat coverage from 9 am - 6 pm EST
  • Participate in phone-based outbound calling and email campaigns
  • Coordinate efforts with the Marketing team to support new project announcements, Expedition Guide development, targeted outreach, and newsletters
  • Enter and maintain leads into the organizational database to a high standard of quality
  • Update recruitment reports/dashboards on ongoing basis
  • Assist Program Coordinators with volunteer preparation and forms collection 
  • Support Development team efforts by identifying volunteers with donor potential
  • Some travel and weekend work required to attend tradeshows, conferences, and visit schools 
  • Other duties as assigned


  • 2 or more years of experience in sales, development outreach, street canvassing, or fund raising; past experience within a global travel-based or non-profit organization preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to Earthwatch’s mission and values
  • Demonstrated passion for sales 
  • Ability to achieve revenue targets
  • Experience with prospecting, lead qualification and conversion
  • Exemplary customer service, interpersonal and relationship-management skills 
  • Outstanding verbal, written and public speaking/presentation skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Adobe Creative Suite
  • High energy, goal oriented and collegial 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a time-sensitive manner
  • Flexibility to respond to changing priorities in a fast paced environment
  • Ability to think strategically and analytically

  • Strong business acumen and negotiation skills

  • Strong interest in environmental conservation issues
  • Experience with non-profit organizations, experiential learning and/or international travel preferred 
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 15 – 25% per year, nationally and internationally
  • Willingness and ability to work occasional weekends for tabling events, conferences and partner visits 
  • Valid driver’s license required
